Kiro

From the Apocrypha of Voren Na'al

The heroic and tragic tale of Kiro, a young water breather from the planet Iskalon illustrates that after the fall of the Empire, things would not be easy for even the bravest of heroes.

It was during the search for Han Solo that Luke Skywalker first met Kiro on the waterworld Iskalon. In the course of an Imperial attack on the planet, Kiro saved the lives of both Skywalker and Princess Leia and exposed a traitor within the school of aquatic natives. Following the death of the Emperor and the destruction of the second Death Star, Iskalon was invited to join the burgeoning Alliance, but declined. Ever restless, Kiro asked to leave his homeworld with Skywalker and his companions, the notorious Rik Duel Gang. It was in the latter company that Kiro met and fell in love with Dani, a typically vivacious and exuberant Zeltron.

Despite Kiro's obvious affinity for the Force, Luke Skywalker was reluctant to train him in the ways of the Jedi. Mindful of his own brush with the Dark Side and the failure of Obi-Wan Kenobi to keep Luke's father from turning to evil, Luke was reluctant to begin teaching the ways of the Force to others. Nevertheless, the Force was with Kiro, and his natural sensitivity increased as time went on. Kiro was initially enraged by Luke's refusal to teach him, but Luke was impressed by Kiro's ability to control his anger and began to reconsider his decision.

But then the Nagai came. During a scouting mission to the Kinooine system, Luke, Dani and Kiro were trapped by the Nagai invasion and the revenge of the Dark Lady Lumiya. Luke and Dani were defeated and captured. Left for dead, Kiro kept his wits about him and infiltrated the Nagai base. He freed Luke and helped him prepare to confront Lumiya a second time. Afterwards, Kiro snuck back into the Nagai stronghold to rescue Dani who had been tortured by the Nagai leader, Den Siva.

Den Siva was not about to let the heroes escape and confronted Kiro as he fled across the edge of a canyon to Skywalker's ship. During the battle, Den and Kiro plunged into a river below the ravine. Neither surfaced, and there was no sign of their fall save for a stain of blood in the water. Luke and Dani soon learned that Den Siva survived. Kiro's body was never recovered, and Dani's already shattered spirit was broken for good.

But among the swimmers of Iskalon, whispered tales of a lonely hero comfort the wayward schools and remind them to be brave. They say this hero protects them still.
